Skiving refers to smoothing the edges and fold lines of all leather panels with a curved blade in a way that allows the panels to be folded up, glued, or sewn to form a finished edge that is smooth and sleek as opposed to bulky. The number of stitches per centimetre will differ depending on the handyman: tight (more stitches per cm) stitching is placed on bags that are to be used intensively; slightly further apart on woven decoration or light-use items. The skilled leatherworkers are able to sew up to 4-7 stitches per centimetre without losing the effect of evenness. In the case of a medium-sized tote bag, the approximate length of stitching of all seams is 3-5 meters of continuous, hand-stitched thread.
